Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is a procedure that eliminates deep facial wrinkles and droopy skin (ptosis) for a smoother, younger-looking appearance. As you age, fatty deposits and excess skin can alter your complexion and affect your self-esteem. A deep plane facelift tightens and lifts your skin to reduce fine lines in the lower face and neck.

At the California Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer a deep plane facelift that reverses signs of aging with a fast recovery time. Dr. Sean Younai and Dr. Alex Neusner have helped thousands of patients restore their complexions and revitalize their appearances with facelift procedures. Contact our office or call (310) 275-1971 to learn more about our transformative deep plane facelift procedures at our Beverly Hills and West Hollywood locations.

About Deep Plane Facelifts

Skin sagging often occurs with a decrease in collagen, the naturally occurring protein in your skin that helps it maintain elasticity. Although some of the effects of collagen decline can be delayed with oral supplements, (1) moderate to severe sagging skin requires surgical intervention. Facelifts are a popular procedure to restore your complexion, and in 2017, surgeons performed over 125,000 of them. (2) If you have moderate to severe wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin (ptosis), a facelift is the most effective anti-aging procedure for restoring your complexion and achieving long-lasting results.

Deep Plane Facelift vs Traditional Facelift

The deep plane facelift differs from the standard facelift in that it lifts and repositions the deeper facial muscles and tissues, not just the skin. This approach provides more natural and longer-lasting results, particularly in the mid-face and lower face, by addressing sagging at a structural level. The deep plane facelift is considered to produce very natural-looking results. By repositioning deeper facial tissues and muscles rather than just tightening the skin, it restores a more youthful appearance without the “pulled” look. This method effectively addresses sagging and provides long-lasting, subtle enhancement.

Deep Plane Facelift Benefits

Deep plane facelifts offer a variety of benefits for restoring your youthful complexion and revitalizing your appearance, including:

  • Sub-SMAS Technique – The deep plane facelift involves the repositioning of the deep musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), which results in a more effective and durable lift compared to other facelift techniques.
  • Natural-Looking Results – Your surgeon’s expertise ensures that the results of your deep plane facelift will appear natural, without looking overly stretched or artificially altered.
  • Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation – The deep plane facelift targets multiple areas of concern, including the lower face, neck, midface, jowls, cheeks, and jawline. This comprehensive approach ensures harmonious results.
  • Long-Lasting Effects – Deep plane facelift surgery produces long-lasting results that can significantly reverse signs of facial aging. Patients can enjoy their enhanced appearance for years to come.
  • Individualized Approach – Surgeons tailor each deep plane facelift procedure to the unique anatomy and goals of every patient, ensuring highly personalized outcomes.
  • Increased Confidence – By addressing facial sagging and restoring a more youthful appearance, the deep plane facelift can boost your confidence and improve your self-image.

Candidates for a Deep Plane Facelift

Candidates for a deep plane facelift usually wish to treat moderate to severe drooping skin and wrinkles. While age is not a limiting factor for the deep plane facelift, patients must be in overall good health and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the surgery. Smokers should quit smoking several weeks before and after the procedure to enhance healing and minimize complications. To determine if you are a suitable candidate for a deep plane facelift, we encourage you to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Younai or Dr. Neusner.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Younai or Dr. Neusner will ask about your goals to understand the look you wish to achieve to help you reduce sagging skin. We will discuss your current medications, medical history, and lifestyle as well as your expectations for the procedure. Based on your surgeon’s assessment, he will recommend the most appropriate facelift technique for your needs.

Preparation

To prepare for a facelift, you will need to stop taking blood thinners and smoking. Usually, blood thinners need to be stopped 1-2 weeks before, and you must stop smoking 6 weeks before the procedure for the best results. We recommend that patients plan meals ahead of time so they can recover comfortably at home without trips to the store. You will need to prepare to take a few weeks off of work to let your body heal after the procedure. You will also need to be prepared to limit physical activity, and we can discuss your lifestyle during your consultation to help you prepare.

Procedure

Before the procedure begins, we will administer anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. Incision patterns and locations vary depending on individual needs and desired outcomes. Your surgeon carefully conceals the incisions within the hairline and natural creases to minimize visible scarring. This attention to detail ensures discreet and well-hidden incisions.

Your surgeon then accesses the deep plane beneath the skin’s surface, gently separating it from the underlying tissues. They reposition the deep musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), allowing for comprehensive facial contouring and tightening.

Where necessary, Dr. Younai or Dr. Neusner will additionally address the neck area, eliminating excess skin and fat, as well as tightening the underlying muscles. This combination of deep plane facelift and neck lift techniques provides harmonious rejuvenation of both the face and neck. Finally, your surgeon meticulously closes the incisions using sutures and other specialized techniques. These incision closures are designed to minimize scarring and promote optimal healing.

Deep Plane Facelift Recovery

After your deep plane facelift surgery, it is vital to follow postoperative instructions to ensure optimal results. Here are some general expectations for the recovery process:

  • Swelling and bruising: Mild to moderate swelling and bruising are normal after a deep plane facelift. These effects will gradually subside over several weeks.
  • Dressings and bandages: Dr. Salibian will apply supportive dressings to your face and may insert small drainage tubes to minimize fluid accumulation. You may be required to wear a compression garment or support chinstrap for a specific period.
  • Pain management: Dr. Salibian will prescribe medication to manage any discomfort or pain you may experience during the recovery period.
  • Restricted activities: It is essential to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and intense exercise for a few weeks following the surgery. Dr. Salibian will provide specific guidelines tailored to your needs.
  • Follow-up appointments: You will attend scheduled follow-up appointments with Dr. Salibian so that he can monitor your healing progress and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Deep Plane Facelift Results

Deep Plane Facelift

The results of a deep plane facelift become increasingly apparent as the healing process progresses. While individual experiences may vary, patients typically observe remarkable improvements in their facial appearance. The natural-looking facelift achieved through this technique enhances facial contours, reduces sagging, eliminates jowls, and creates a more youthful overall aesthetic.

Complementary Procedures

Eyelid Lift

An eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)is a procedure that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin around the eyes. Aging can cause skin to sag and fine lines can quickly develop into deeper wrinkles that affect your self-esteem and perceived age. We can perform an upper, lower, or quad blepharoplasty depending on your needs:

  • Upper Eyelid Lift: During an upper eyelid lift, we will make a small incision along the crease of your upper eyelid to remove excess skin for a more youthful look.
  • Lower Eyelid Lift: During a lower eyelid lift, we will make an incision along the inside of your lower eyelid to remove excess skin and fat causing a tired look.
  • Quad Eyelid Lift: If you have sagging skin and excess fat around the upper and lower eyelids, a quad blepharoplasty will rejuvenate your eyes. During a quad blepharoplasty, we will adjust the skin around the upper and lower eyelids and remove excess fat for a more youthful appearance.

We can easily combine a blepharoplasty with a facelift for additional benefits and address two concerns in one appointment.

Lip Lift

A lip lift is a procedure that enhances the appearance of your upper lip by shortening the distance between the nose and the upper lip for fuller, more youthful-looking lips. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a tiny imperceptible incision beneath the nostrils to reposition your skin. Unlike temporary lip augmentation techniques such as fillers, a lip lift offers permanent results that can withstand the test of time.
